Mold upon arrival is extremely unlikely, most reviewers mentioning mold in shea butter misunderstand the fat of unrefined shea butter separating from the butter due to climate fluctuations and believe it is mold. If you add water to shea butter without also adding a preservative, mold will eventually grow. We do not add water to our shea butter, so mold won’t grow.

About the smell: unrefined shea butter has a detectable smell that can be described as nutty or smokey. Imagine grilling a steak over coals – when the steak is done cooking, can you detect a smokey/almost burnt smell? This is similar to what unrefined shea butter smells like. It’s not a strong smell to most people, but others don’t like it and think they can cover or mask it with essential oils, and this is just not possible. You can use less shea butter in a formula in order to dilute the nutty scent, but you can’t “mask it”. All skin care formulations that contain shea butter will have an undertone of that scent. But again, most people love it.

Just purchase a small 8oz bar of Unrefined Shea Butter and give it a try. It’s not expensive and it supports 1,000’s of women in Africa whose main source of income is harvesting and making unrefined shea butter. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it again. But if you love it like most people do, you will have found the holy grail for your skin.
